R&D

Leading edge metrology is at the core of all that IBS does. Further to its in-house programmes, IBS partakes in a range of international projects spearheading solutions to next generation measurement challenges for industry and academia:

NANOMEND (website)

NANOMEND is pioneering novel technologies for in-line detection, cleaning and repair of micro and nano scale defects for thin films coated on large area substrates. Examples include films used in the production of packaging materials, flexible solar panels, lighting, digital signage and displays.

Our role:

In collaboration with the University of Huddersfield UK, IBS is responsible for the development of a new optical  interferometry system which delivers fast and high precision areal surface measurements suitable for particle measurement on foils as well as stepped and freeform micro-nanoscale structures.

For more information, please see our Wavelength Scanning Interferometer websection.

MIDEMMA (website

MIDEMMA addresses the minimisation of defects in micro-manufacturing. Implementing a full process monitoring,  'zero defect' approach, it seeks to improve micro-manufacturing by:

  • Reducing process variability - detecting defects as soon as they are generated or in the case that it is possible, are going to be generated, by predictive modeling.
  • Allowing the use of less expensive machines, that can reduce their variability through monitoring.
  • Requiring a less skilled working force, thanks to acquired process setting knowledge and the development of smart decision-making tools.

Our role:

As a Midemma partner, IBS has developed a nanometer resolution 3D probe which may be integrated onto ultra precision machine tools. Where current probes are typically 1D, this new probe enables measurement of ultra precision freeform structures, of growing importance to industry.

See a Midemma video update here.

Clean4Yield (website)

Roll to roll contactless web handlingThis EU-funded project targets contamination and defect control in roll-to-roll organic electronics production – ensuring high enough yields for cost-effective manufacturing. To this end, the partners are developing new technologies for inspecting, cleaning and repairing moving foils, and detecting and preventing defects in large-scale roll-to-roll production of OLEDs and OPVs.

Our role:

As consortium member, IBS Precision Engineering is responsible for the novel development of air bearing technologies for contactless roll-to-roll transport with ultra precision positioning control. IBS has also developed a contactless cleaning system for particle removal from foils for next generation printed electronics.

In collaboration with the Technical University of Denmark, videos have been made available providing an overview of the contactless transport and contactless cleaning technologies developed and their use.

ProDuZo

ProDuZo (Production of Thin Film Solar Cells) is a project which has addressed new production processes for Thin Film Solar Cells. Its focus has been the achievement of high precision back end interconnection on thin film photovoltaics.

Our role:

IBS has developed a module for real-time monitoring and measurement of thin film solar cell production at micron overlay accuracy. Combining the measurement data with visual information, a complete overview of the system accuracy and process parameters is given.
